“Revolutionary” to “Disastrous”

More than 7 billion barrels of oil and six hundred trillion cubic feet of natural gas were produced by hydraulic fracturing in the USA, while more than 1.7 million wells were completed. (American Petroleum Institute).

Apart from the increase in the production of hydrocarbon, hydraulic fracturing created millions of jobs. According to American Petroleum Institute (API) report, 10.3 million jobs in the USA are supported by the oil and gas industry. During the first decade of Shale Bloom, 2.7 million jobs created in the USA. (Harvard Business School). The analysts projected 1.9 million additional jobs by 2035.

Hydraulic fracturing is revolutionized the oil and gas sector around the globe. Still, at the same time, it turns disastrous because of its dangerous effects on the environments and human life.

WHAT IS HYDRAULIC FRACTURING OR FRACKING?

Hydraulic fracturing or fracking is a process or treatment usually carried out for low permeable reservoirs such as shale reservoirs. A fluid consisting of water and other chemicals injected into a reservoir with high pressure causes fracture inside the reservoir. Hydraulic fracturing promotes the conductivity of formation and allows the hydrocarbon to flow.
Now it is essential to see the composition of fracking fluid,” About 99.5% portion of fracking fluid consists of water while rests are sand and other safe chemicals additives that used in daily life such as toothpaste, makeup remover or in the food. The composition of hydraulic Fracking seems not to contain any dangerous chemical which can affect the Environment or human being,

Why Hydraulic Fracturing/Fracking is essential?

Hydraulic fracturing is the process that increases the permeability of the formation and stimulates the flow of hydrocarbon by producing the fractures in the rock formation. It enhances the productivity of the reservoir and the recovery of hydrocarbon.
Hydraulic fracturing produces fractures in the rock formation that stimulate the flow of natural gas or oil, increasing the volumes that can be recovered. Wells might be bored hundreds vertically to thousands of feet underneath the land surface and may incorporate even or directional segments expanding a large number of feet.
A large quantity of fluid consists of water, sand, and other chemical additives pumped at high pressure into the rock formation, which produces fractures. The fractures might be extended hundreds of feet aside from the well.
Upon injecting high-pressure fluid, rock formation’s internal pressure increases and causes the hydrocarbon to return to the surface, called “Flowback”.
“FLOWBACK” consists of formation fluid and injected fluid and contains some radioactive and toxic material. Generally, the “Flowback” is recycled or disposed of.

Why Hydraulic Fracturing is banned in many countries?

Most countries ban hydraulic fracturing due to climate change, greenhouse gasses effects and contamination of water. France was banned hydraulic fracturing in 2011, according to the “Charter of Environment” of 2005. Bulgaria was the second country that banned hydraulic fracturing. Denmark banned Fracking and use wind power as an alternative to fossil fuel.
Although Fracking is banned in Europe, Latin America but still used in the United States of America, China and Canada.

Why it is dangerous for people and Environment?

Hydraulic fracturing has detrimental effects on the groundwater, surface water and wildlife and wild landscapes. If the process of Fracking went wrong, it could contaminate the groundwater. Disposing of “Flowback” is a big problem; it could contaminate the water supplies and streams water. The fracking sites cause the release of harmful gases, which can cause cancer, severe headache, asthma and birth defect.

Why it is dangerous for wildlands?

A million gallons of water used in the Fracking process causes a severe impact on the agricultural land. It is also industrialization the rural landscape and poising the water.

What is an alternative to hydraulic Fracking?

The primary purpose of using Fracking is to extracting hydrocarbon from unconventional reservoirs. The alternative to hydraulic Fracking is Wind and Solar power, which are renewable energy. These are affordable and clean sources of energy. These sources do not cause the emission of toxic gasses and totally Environment friendly.

Why hydraulic fracturing is important?

Hydraulic fracturing enhances the productivity of wells. According to one statistical report, 75% of oil production increased in the USA annually from 2007 to 2016, and 39% of gas production increased due to revolutionized technology of Fracking.
